Rope and Twine FAQ's
What material should I choose, PP, PE, Nylon or Natural Fibre?
Polypropylene (PP): Lightweight, good for general use, resistant to water & UV, great where cost matters.
Polyethylene (PE): Usually stronger, more abrasion resistant; better for marine or heavy-use applications.
Nylon: Has good elasticity & strength, handles shocks and heavy loads well; sometimes more expensive.
Natural Fibre (e.g. Sisal, Cotton): Good for aesthetic, craft, or low-stress uses; not as durable in wet/UV-exposed conditions.
How do I figure out the right diameter or ply for my use?
Think about what load the rope/twine must bear: lifting, tying, tension, static or dynamic loads. A heavier ply / thicker rope handles more.
If it’s by-the-metre: measure the longest span you need plus a margin.
For applications like restraint, marine, or industrial, check manufacturer’s strength ratings (often listed in product details).
If in doubt, it’s safer to go a size up.
Is the rope/twine UV treated / weather resistant? And what about abrasion?
- Many ropes in the range are UV treated (or inherently UV resilient if made from certain polymers) which helps them last outdoors.
- Polyethylene / polypropylene ropes are usually good with water, salt, damping, etc. Natural fibre ropes degrade faster in wet/UV environments.
- For high abrasion conditions (sliding over surfaces, ropes rubbing, etc.), look for “hard laid”, “heavy duty”, or “abrasion resistant” versions; or use guards / sleeves.
Can I buy rope/twine by the metre and do you offer bulk / wholesale pricing?
Yes, there are many “by-the-metre” rope & twine products, so you can get exactly what you need without buying full coils.
Haverford offers trading / wholesale accounts for large orders in industries like marine, industrial, mining etc. If you need rope in large quantities, you can enquire about bulk pricing.
Also note: lead times or dispatch speed may vary depending on stock levels, especially for larger sizes or specialty ropes.
